Chinese authorities are conducting a crackdown on activists online and off, and they have sent a message that wealthy businessmen are not safe. The detention appears to represent the latest in a string defining online space as a public place. Coming at the same time as the authorities try to corral Big Vs and criminalise wayward online posts, it appears China’s online public square is under siege.
